Notes From the Boosters President Sue Genuario

20 Jan 2010

First off I want to congratulate the Carl Sandburg Middle School students who performed
with the District 10 Junior District Honors Orchestra on January 9.  Our orchestra was well
represented by 15 students who auditioned into the orchestra last November. These
students were Eric Drumheller, Candace Park, Katie Murray, Jessica Metter, Katie
Genuario, Kate Perry, Andrew Smith, Marco Mills, Camille McMullen, Stephen Bradley, Eric
Conway, Tristan Keightley, Jack Reisenberg, Claire Questad, and Andrew Peham.  The
Junior District Orchestra was made up of 82 musicians in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades from
21 public and private middle and high schools from Arlington, Falls Church City,
Alexandria City, and part of Fairfax County. The orchestra met only three times before the
performance on January 9 which was wonderful.  Their conductor was Beverly Windor.

As you probably have heard the FCPS 2011 Budget is still facing a huge deficit (at least
$176 million) due to decreased county revenue from lower property values, less funding
from the state government, and at this point unknown federal funding.  Many programs we
take for granted are at risk (like all day kindergarten) and our Elementary School Band
and Stings programs are still high on the list!  As you well know without elementary
programs within a few years the middle and high school music programs may no longer
exist.  So I encourage you to get involved and learn about this budget.

On Thursday evening January 21 at 7:00 pm attend the CSMS Special PTA meeting to
learn about the 2011 FCPS Budget and the Ten Cents Makes Sense! proposal that
proposes a 10 cent property tax rate increase that is earmarked for FCPS and would
equalize the $176 million dollar deficit.

Log on to advocacy resources such as
www.faceadvocacy.org to save band & strings and
find a link to their Facebook page.  The Fairfax Arts Coalition for Fairfax Arts Coalition for
Education (FACE) has employed a national expert, John Benham, to prepare a report from
the data he has collected and analyzed in support of elementary band and strings
programs.  John Benham spoke at the January 12 rally at George Mason and will speak at
the school board public hearings next Monday or Tuesday.  The web address for FACE is
www.faceadvocacy.org.

Each FCPS pyramid Band and Strings programs are collecting money to assist FACE to
pay Mr. Benham for his work.  The West Potomac Band Boosters organization is leading
this for our pyramid and the Carl Sandburg Boosters organization is hoping that each
orchestra member can donate $1.00 to this cause.  So please have your student bring to
class a $1 donation in an envelope marked FACE c/o Carl Sandburg Orchestra Boosters
and we will pass the money collected on to the West Potomac Band Boosters. If you can
make a donation by 29 January this will assist us in making this donation to West Potomac
Boosters in a timely manner.

Write letters to Sharon Bulova and other County Board of Supervisors. Let them know you
are in support of saving at risk FCPS school programs especially elementary band and
strings. You can contact Ms. Bulova at :
https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/gov/bos/cforms/bc_feedback.asp or address letters to
Chairman Board of Supervisors: Government Center,12000 Government Center Parkway
Suite 530, Fairfax, VA 22035.  Letter- writing tips, samples and contact information can be
found on
www.faceadvocacy.org.

The West Potomac and Carl Sandburg  Orchestra, Band, and Chorus programs are well
respected throughout the county and beyond.  They are a feather in our schools' caps.
Lets keep them that way!
